The Town of Beaufort continues to work on infrastructure improvements. This years-long project has many phases, some complete and some starting soon. In 2018, the Town conducted a street conditions assessment, and streets in need of repairs were categorized into paving only projects and projects requiring underground infrastructure work.
In Fiscal Years 2020, 2022, and 2023, monies were set aside for the resurfacing of streets in need of repair that the study found to have underlying utilities in good condition. Currently, nine roads are being resurfaced as a part of the 2023 Street Rehabilitation Project. While these improvements are much desired, we understand that they will cause disruptions to traffic patterns, parking, and daily life for residents and visitors alike.
This week, the Town’s contractor started the multi-street resurfacing project. Work began on Joyce Blvd. and Fairview Drive. During resurfacing, the roads will be restricted to one lane, and drivers are urged to find alternative routes. Over the next few weeks, repaving will continue in various locations throughout Town to include the 200 & 300 blocks of Moore Street, the 400 & 500 blocks of Pollock Street, the 200 block of Marsh Street, Campen Road, George Street, and Pine View Street. As work progresses on Moore, Pollock, and Marsh Streets, on-street parking will be restricted. This phase of the resurfacing work is anticipated to be complete by late July to early August.
In early July, additional street and underground infrastructure work will occur throughout Beaufort. These projects are part of a USDA-funded project that will include significant infrastructure repairs and upgrades prior to resurfacing. These next phases of the project are anticipated to take several years to complete.
A new project update page with a construction schedule is under development for launch on the Town website and is anticipated to be live by early to mid-June. This project page will be available at www.beaufortnc.org and will contain updated information as it is available. The Town is continuing to work with contractors to provide a detailed schedule to assist in limiting the disruption to day-to-day life.
We thank you for your patience as we embark on these major projects that will improve the Town for generations to come.
